April Society General Meeting + Speaker: Rachelle Niemela

Join us for our next public meeting at the Parkside Centre on Durham Street in Sudbury. Doors open at 1:15 pm for socializing and light refreshments. Please bring your own coffee mug or travel mug.

The meeting at 2 pm will feature our guest speaker Rachelle Niemela with her presentation on community building, healthy living and food security. 

About Rachelle: 

Rachelle worked for 23 years at Cambrian College in the Information Technology department as an operational and project manager.  Now retired for over 13 years, she is involved in a number of volunteer grassroots organizations, and is especially focused on community building, healthy living and food security.

A proud grandmother, she believes in protecting the environment and making Greater Sudbury a great place to live. She was Chair of the Ward 8 Community Action Network for over 11 years and helped to establish several gardens in the ward, including the Twin Forks Community Garden, the Lebel Community Garden, the Place Hurtubise Community Garden, and the Place Hurtubise Park Food Forest/Pollinator Garden. She also served as Chair of the Sudbury Community Garden Network for 2 years.

Her current community volunteer roles include co-lead of the Twin Forks garden, a member of the Greater Sudbury Food Policy Council, an executive member of the Coalition for a Liveable Sudbury, and a board member of the Junction Creek Stewardship Committee.

She will be presenting the 10 years of work that has been done at the Twin Forks Community Gardens, including the recent projects that include a new greenhouse and accessible paths throughout the garden. The garden is a benevolent garden established to help feed local residents in need and to provide educational opportunities for people who want to grow their own food.
