Please bring your own coffee mug or travel mug. \nThe meeting at 2 pm will feature our guest speaker Cassandra Miller who runs a small indoor plant business in Greater Sudbury called Small Pots. She will be presenting “Caring for Indoor Plants”. \nAbout Cassandra:\nPhoto of Cassandra Miller\nCassandra Miller is a retired dog groomer and plant enthusiast with a passion for helping people feel better and houseplants. Small Pots is her way of joining the two\, allowing her better mental health\, a healthy space for people to feel at home\, and an opportunity to show people they can grow their own amazing plants. \nIn her past experiences of purchasing plants\, finding the right pot to match her decor\, or proper soil to repot into to help new plants thrive was always an issue\, as well as proper advice and care on maintaining great growing conditions. Often purchasing the wrong plants for her space and left feeling defeated\, her goal was to offer low maintenance\, easy-to-care-for plants with easy to follow instructions\, at a reasonable cost and pots to go with\, to help any black thumb turn green. \nCassandra’s presentation will be on general plant care\, light\, water and soil needs. She will also discuss what to do with a new plant when you get it home\, repotting new plants\, choosing proper container size\, and fertilizing.

Please bring your own coffee mug or travel mug. \nThe meeting at 2 pm will feature our guest speaker Franco Mariotti\, Naturalist and Science Communicator on the topic: “Hope in a Changing Landscape: The Sudbury Rewilding Story”  \nAbout Franco’s presentation:\nThe city of Greater Sudbury was just a few decades ago surrounded by a black landscape that looked like the Moon. The city had serious image problem that prevented new people and businesses from moving here. The Sudbury of today is a very different and attractive place to visit. The restoration of life to the landscape has positively changed the future of the city and has inspired hope locally and abroad. Explore through images and story what has happened to make that incredible positive change and what can be learnt from it. \nAbout Franco:\nFranco is a Biologist\, Naturalist and a Science Communicator. \nHe was employed as a Staff Scientist and Science Communicator at Science North for 32 years. He was there at the birth of the science centre where he developed exhibits\, programs\, videos and presentations for the public. During his time at Science North he has delivered hundreds of presentations and developed content for in-house exhibits. He was also part of the development team that over the years has created many travelling exhibits that travelled to major science centres and museums throughout North America. With his work and background in Natural History he has also travelled to Tanzania in the making of an IMAX film on Dr. Jane Goodall and to Borneo in another IMAX film on Orangutans. \nFranco is an avid traveller having visited ‘wild places’ in North and South America as well as Africa. \nFor decades Franco has been involved with numerous environmentally based community and provincial groups all dealing with the protection and restoration of the natural environment. \nUpon retiring at Science North\, he has been involved in the production of documentary films dealing with environmental issues and acts as a Naturalist and Guide for Polar Expeditions Cruise Ships in both the Arctic and in the Antarctic. \nPhoto of Franco Mariotti

SUMMARY:August Society General Meeting + Perennial and Vegetable Show + Speaker: Phil Beauchamp
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our next public meeting at the Parkside Centre on Durham Street in Sudbury. Doors open at 1:15 pm for socializing and light refreshments. \nThe meeting at 2 pm will feature guest speaker Phil Beauchamp from Beautiful Field Farm and Fruit Trees.  \n\nAbout the Guest Speaker: Phil Beauchamp\nBeautiful Field Farm and Fruit Trees officially opened in Sept 2021\, but previously operated under the name Lewis Hardy Fruit trees from 2019 until 2021. Prior to that is was Lewis’s Hardy Fruit Trees that was found by Ron Lewis in 1982. \nIt was Ron Lewis’s dream and hobby after being frustrated with trees being offered for sale at most garden centres and nurseries. He made it his mission to seek out trees that would thrive in our climate\, and he found the amazing hardy varieties being bred and researched at the University of Saskatchewan. He was one of the very first people to make these available for gardeners and growers here in northern Ontario. His business has operated here annually in spring and Ron has been a local expert here making many presentations regarding this topic for local media and gardening organizations. \nRon has stepped aside in recent years and Phil Beauchamp\, Ron’s former neighbour\, has taken up the torch of making these hardy fruit trees available. Phil was always curious about what Ron or “Mr. Lewis” was doing on the other side of fence and often found himself over there\, admiring his giant pumpkins and all the amazing fruit trees. Of course Ron is always quick to impart his wisdom with anyone who comes to listen and Phil himself always had an interest in gardening\, farming and homesteading. So the first thing Phil did when he bought his own home was plant a whole lot of fruit trees. Of course he didn’t always do things properly and had more of a “plant first and figure out why they died later” approach. Which it turns out is the best way to learn right? So between constantly nagging Ron for advice and reading as much as he could on the topic he slowly developed a serious expertise on the topic. This has been an exciting (and demanding) opportunity for Phil who has a real entrepreneurial spirit and is deeply passionate about food security\, local agriculture and permaculture practices. \n\nAbout the Perennial and Vegetable Show\nWe will also be hosting our Perennial and Vegetable Show \nView the guidelines for entry into our August Show

DESCRIPTION:Every Tuesday and Saturday morning (10am – 12pm) throughout the summer months we encourage volunteers to come out at John Street Park and help in any way they can. \nPlease contact Barbara Knuff (705) 562-5001 if you would like company while working at the park. \n\nThe Sudbury Horticultural Society plants and maintains a beautiful park at the corner of Paris Street and John Streets. DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThe Sudbury Market and Sudbury Horticultural Society invite all gardeners in Greater Sudbury to join in a celebration of gardening on Saturday May 25\, 2024. On that day\, the Society will host its annual Spring Plant Sale of hardy perennials donated by members and supporters.  Since these plants will be sourced from local gardens you can be sure that they are hardy in our growing zone.  Master Gardeners will be on-hand to provide gardening advice. Please bring your own coffee mug or travel mug. \nThe meeting at 2 pm will feature guest speaker Ron Lewis with his presentation on “Tending the Six-Month Northern Vegetable Garden”. \nFor many gardeners in Greater Sudbury and area\, the vegetable garden ends with clean-up on the long\, Labour-Day weekend in early September. True\, some great treats (such as the best of tomatoes) are only available in the warm summer months. But as we move more seriously toward the 100 km (or is it 100 m) local food should not overlook the cool-season vegetables\, especially as\, notwithstanding climate change\, northerners have their share of cool (some would say ‘cold’) weather. This presentation explores growing some beloved vegetables that not only thrive in cool weather but actually give their best only when grown in cool weather\, avoiding the stress of summer heat (remember\, summer heat?). \nAbout Ron Lewis: \nRon Lewis\nRon is a long-time member of the Sudbury Horticultural Society\, and has reveled in entering vegetables and fruits he has grown into the annual SHS competition in August. Although well-known as a grower of winter-hardy fruit trees\, bushes\, and vines\, he considers himself an organic gardener who also grows fruit. With a background in gardening and teaching\, each for several decades in Greater Sudbury\, he likes nothing better than sharing his gardening ideas with others through PowerPoint presentations\, hands-on workshops\, and tours of his home garden; dozens of times for each of the first two\, and literally hundreds of times for the last. Aside from several presentations to the SHS over the years\, Ron has also presented to other horticultural societies in Ontario\, and twice to the Ontario Horticultural Association (OHA).

Please bring your own coffee mug or travel mug. \nThe meeting at 2 pm will feature guest speaker Paulette Macdonald with her presentation entitled “A Little Patch of Happiness: Soil-searching in the urban garden”. \nPhoto of Paulette Macdonald\nPaulette Macdonald is the team lead at Westmount 4-H Club Community Garden in New Sudbury. The garden was founded 10 years ago with the intention of facilitating all aspects of gardening for the Sudbury 4-H Club participants and their families where youth learn practical skills that they can apply right away in their lives. Since then\, the team has been awarded for creativity and delivery of experiential learning programs and leadership. \nPreviously\, the Sudbury 4-H Club was founded in 2002 in response to a growing need for youth to engage in practical skills for better living. Having been a 4-H member herself in the Ottawa Valley\, Paulette knew that the philosophy of “Learn to Do by Doing” (the 4-H motto) was a successful way to share knowledge. Thus\, the Club was born and 4-H Ontario could now boast its first-ever urban 4-H Club! Ever since her childhood on the family farm\, Paulette encourages personal connection to nature and gardening as a means of soil-searching and experiencing transformation in the garden. \nToday\, the community garden is an ongoing project with workshops and a program called Youth-for-Youth Shared Harvest. For instance\, the program offers time in the garden for youth and families to enjoy harvesting their own fresh produce in a fun and wholesome environment. \nPaulette continues her own soil-searching having completed a year-long course in practical herbalism with a wholistic approach to tending both cultivated and wild plants\, and making potent herbal medicines and nourishing foods. Also\, during the height of the pandemic\, Paulette graduated with a B. A. Concentration in Women’s\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies with minor courses in Indigenous studies. Currently\, Paulette is a board member of the Westmount Neighbourhood Association and the Sudbury District 4-H Association. She is an avid gardener\, hiker and a beginner harpist.

Please bring your own coffee mug or travel mug. \nThe meeting at 2 pm will feature our guest speaker\, Heidi Eisenhauer entitled “Propagating Native Plants” \nHeidi will speak to propagating native plant seeds\, propagation techniques\, easy to grow native plants\, how to choose based on your garden ecosystem\, plus a selection of local plants on the list to aid in re-greening. Heidi will also touch on increasing native pollinators and feeding the birds. \nHeidi Eisenhauer\nBiography: \nHeidi studied urban agriculture with the San Francisco League of Urban Gardeners (SLUG) in 2000 and gave 10k+ compost workshops. Working on many community garden and harm reduction community garden projects. She became interested in native plants through her love of birds.  She volunteered & worked with the North American Native Plant Society for 3+ years on various projects. Through this work she was connected with invasive plant action groups and spent many weekends tackling garlic mustard & sea buckthorn. She co-coordinated the RoncyWorks BIA Green Team with 32 streetside garden beds & volunteers. Heidi designed the contents & plants for the first canoe for the David Suzuki Foundation Buterflyway program. \nWhen Heidi moved to Sudbury in 2017 and she took a Morel Family Foundation Park under her wing and has worked for 7 years to eradicate exotic garden migrants and invasive plants. With Rainbow Routes\,  Invasive Plant Council\,  Coalition for a Liveable Sudbury + Heidi has facilitated native plant and invasive plant pull strolls.   Heidi has a love of Seedy Sundays and forest walks – she collects native plant seeds throughout the seasons and gives native plant and seed walks and talks with her ‘free time’. \nIn addition to her volunteer endeavours\, Heidi is a vocal advocate for homelessness issues\, working towards comprehensive solutions for marginalized communities.  As the Executive Director of Réseau ACCESS Network\, Heidi works towards providing equitable health services for people who use drugs\, highlighting Harm Reduction\, Supervised Consumption Site\, 2S-LGBTQIA+\, Peer Programming\, and Education services.

His presentation will examine a front yard / backyard garden design of his that was completed earlier this year in the south end of Sudbury\, and will cover how to design a garden all the way through to installation.Nathan grew up in the Cariboo-Chilcotin interior of British Columbia\, Canada. Hiking and biking among the Douglas Firs and Lodgepole Pines\, Nathan developed a deeply rooted connection to nature. His career began at the University of British Columbia where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology\, specializing in botany. It was here that he learned about the intricate world of plants and how they function. During this time\, he also began learning about plant germination and basic care while working in the UBC Botany Department’s greenhouse.After completing his undergraduate degree\, Nathan accepted a job working as a horticulturist at the UBC Botanical Gardens and Nitobe Memorial Garden. While at the Garden\, Nathan continued to develop his skills in plant identification and care as he learned from experienced botanists\, curators\, and horticulturists who looked after numerous plant collections from all over the world. After moving to Ontario\, Nathan worked as a seasonal horticulturist at the University of Guelph Arboretum while earning a Master degree in Landscape Architecture. Once finished\, Nathan worked as a sessional instructor at the University of Guelph\, as well as a project manager and landscape steward for a landscape restoration / redevelopment project on a 6-acre property north of Guelph\, Ontario. Nathan moved to Sudbury\, Ontario in the fall of 2018\, and spent the 2019 season as the Landscape Designer at the Azilda Greenhouses. In 2020\, Nathan began offering design services to the Greater Sudbury area with Gardens by Nathan (www.gardensbynathan.ca).

DESCRIPTION:Join us for our next public meeting at the Parkside Centre on Durham Street in Sudbury. Doors open at 1:15 pm for socializing and light refreshments. Please bring your own coffee mug or travel mug. \nThe meeting at 2 pm will feature our guest speaker\, Fionna Tough\, Urban Food Coordinator\, Flour Mill Community Farm  \nFionna Tough\nSpeaker Biography \nFionna Tough is a Settler person\, born and raised in Sudbury/ N’Swakamok. She studied Linguistics and Political Science at U of T before graduating from Fleming College’s Sustainable Agriculture Program and has been growing food and educating others to do the same for the better part of the last ten years. In 2021\, Fionna began studying Project Management at Cambrian College where she learned how to apply the PM Framework to community development work. She is very excited to be coordinating the Flour Mill Community Farm (FMCF) through her role as the Urban Food Coordinator via reThink Green & The Foodshed Project. The FMCF is very close to her heart\, and she supports its efforts in honour of David Dubois & Erica Lagios\, who were movers and shakers in the local food movement. \nAbout the Flour Mill Community Farm \nThe Flour Mill Community Farm is a community-driven project that was sparked by residents of greater Sudbury who wanted to make positive change in the Flour Mill and Donovan neighbourhoods. Since breaking ground in 2017\, this initiative has used agriculture as a tool to help youth gain meaningful job experience\, social skills development\, and a deeper connection to the environment and the food system. Fresh\, ecologically-raised produce is grown by the youth each year and is offered at affordable prices to those living near the farm. The farm produces hundreds of pounds of food each year and has employed over 50 youth in Greater Sudbury\, as well as new\, aspiring farmers. In 2023\, a new ¼ acre site will be put into production to better supply those accessing food through the project.

I am 76 yrs old\, married\, with three boys and four grand children. I have been a PSW for 32 years and am still working with one client just because I enjoy it. I have been volunteering for over ten yrs in my hometown of Windsor and for the past 30 years here in St. Charles and Sudbury. I was a member of the St. Charles First Response for 25 years. I serve on the St. Charles Beautification Committee and the Remembrance Day Committee. I also am a member of Magical Paws Pet Therapy. Our members bring our dogs to all the nursing homes\, retirement homes\, and schools in Sudbury. \nI got involved with raising monarch butterflies five years ago after seeing a friend’s posts on Facebook. She was raising monarchs and releasing them in memory of loved ones whom had passed on. I thought it was a beautiful idea\, that served two purposes: to help save the monarch\, and help heal a broken heart. I am honoured to pass on my knowledge to the members of the Sudbury Horticultural Society. \nThank you for having me. \nPerennial and Vegetable Show \nWe will also be hosting our Perennial and Vegetable Show. \nView the guidelines for entry into our August Show.

DESCRIPTION:Register for Free Online\nPlease join the Ugly Barn Farm and the Sudbury Horticultural Society on Sunday June 4th from 1pm – 3pm at the John Street Park. \n\nIn cooperation with the Sudbury Horticultural Society\, the Ugly Barn Farm will be demonstrating how to inoculate a perennial mushroom garden bed. This mushroom has many names including: wine cap/ king stropharia/ garden giant and is both beneficial to the garden soil and plants as well as being an edible mushroom!\n\nDuring this workshop we will discuss:\n\nHow to inoculate your garden bed\nThe materials you will need\nHow to maintain your garden bed and expand it\nHow to identify this mushroom\nHow it benefits the garden\nHow to harvest/ prepare it\n\nThere is no cost to the workshop\, but we ask that you please register through our website so we can anticipate numbers.
