DESCRIPTION:Woodland Sisters – Women Who Break Trail \nThe Sudbury Historical Society is pleased to welcome Woodland Sisters\, sisters and co-creators Caitlin and Cassidy\, as our February guest speakers. \nTheir presentation\, Women Who Break Trail\, challenges traditional narratives of the Canadian outdoors that have long centered on “woodsmen\,” “craftsmen\,” and “outdoorsmen.” Through a powerful lino-print series\, Woodland Sisters highlight the stories of women who defied expectations\, ventured into rugged landscapes\, and became pioneers in traditionally male-dominated industries. \nThe presentation explores the lives of lumberjills\, Indigenous women\, frontier women\, wilderness riders\, gold-rush prospectors\, and generations of mothers and daughters who lived resilient\, demanding lives in Northern Ontario. These women not only endured the wilderness but shaped it\, breaking trail for those who followed. \nWomen Who Break Trail offers both historical insight and artistic interpretation\, bringing attention to overlooked stories and celebrating the strength\, skill\, and determination of women in Canada’s outdoor history.

DESCRIPTION:Presentation: The Bell Gift Turns 100 \nIn recognition of Bell Park’s 100th anniversary in 2026\, guest presenter Paul Haynes will share the story of William and Katherine Bell\, the construction of Bell Mansion\, and Bell’s gift of more than 100 acres to the citizens of Sudbury. \n \nAbout the Presenter \nPaul Haynes is a local history explorer and an urban hike leader with the Rainbow Routes Association. He has led more than 150 historical walks throughout Greater Sudbury\, including his annual “Walk the Bell Gift.” He is also co-chair of the Kingsmount–Bell Park Community Action Network\, where he leads regular neighbourhood heritage walks.

The meeting at 2 pm. \nSociety General Meeting Guest Speaker: Carrie Regenstreif from Sudbury Shared Harvest\n\n \nWe are pleased to have Carrie Regenstreif from Sudbury Shared Harvest as our guest speaker. \nSudbury Shared Harvest is a charitable organization with a mission to cultivate community health by connecting people\, the food we eat\, and the land it comes from. They support people in gaining the knowledge\, skills\, and resources they need to access or grow their own food in ways that enhance our urban environment. \n\n\n\n\n\nPumpkinFest\nOctober brings one of the most colourful and creative events on the Sudbury Horticultural Society calendar: PumpkinFest. Each year\, gardeners of all ages bring their best pumpkins—carved\, decorated\, or grown to impressive sizes—to compete in a showcase of autumn artistry. Past PumpkinFests have featured pumpkin carving workshops led by skilled carvers and friendly judging in categories for adults\, youth\, and children. \nPumpkin Show Schedule – October 26\nBring your entries at 12:30. Learn about the history\, progress\, and future of the city’s regreening efforts\, and discover how community action helped bring forests back to life. \n\nAbout Camille\nCamille holds an undergraduate degree in Biology (specializing in Zoology) from Laurentian University and a postgraduate certificate in Environmental Visual Communication from Fleming College at the Royal Ontario Museum. She has worked in various roles focused on communicating environmental science. \nSince joining the City of Greater Sudbury in fall 2024\, Camille has visited over 1\,000 students across more than 30 schools\, engaging young minds in the story of Sudbury’s environmental recovery. \n\n“Most students today don’t know how badly our landscape was affected by industries such as mining… It’s important for them to understand the history of our city and how it relates to their own lives\,” says Camille. “It’s also encouraging to share some positive aspects of human impact and how we as a community were able to bring back forests against all odds.” \n\n

DESCRIPTION:About the Event\n\nThe Sudbury Market and Sudbury Horticultural Society invite all gardeners in Greater Sudbury to join in a celebration of gardening on Saturday May 31\, 2025 from 9am to 2pm at Elm Place in downtown Sudbury. \nOn that day\, the Society will host its annual Gardeners’ Day and Spring Plant Sale of hardy perennials donated by members and supporters. This is our largest annual fundraiser for the Sudbury Horticultural Society to support our events and intitiatives across Greater Sudbury. Dozens of garden-related and local vendors will also be available for you to browse while you visit! \n\n\n\nAbout the Plant Sale\nPlants for Sale \nPlants are donated from local gardens so you can be sure that they are hardy in our growing zone. Master Gardeners will be on-hand to provide gardening advice. The plant sale tables will be set up outside of Elm Place near the entrance to the Sudbury Market facing Elm Street. The vendors for this event will be located both indoors and outdoors so be sure to explore while you visit. \nArrive early for the best selection of plants. We recommend that you bring some plastic bins for transporting your plants to your vehicle and home. We will have volunteers and rolling carts on-hand to help you bring your plants to your vehicle. \n\nView photos from our 2024 Gardeners Day and Spring Plant Sale at the Market\n\nCash Only \nPlease note that we accept cash only for our plant sale. We will have some change available but please bring different denominations (small bills\, loonies\, and twoonies) to ensure a speedier checkout! A great way to add structure and long-term greenery to your outdoor space. \n\nConiferous Trees of Ontario\n\nGlencore will be giving away a pollinator-friendly mix of milkweed and echinacea\, two beautiful native perennials that support butterflies and bees. Milkweed is essential for Monarch butterflies and thrives in sunny\, dry areas. Echinacea (coneflower) offers long-lasting blooms\, attracts pollinators\, and handles tough soil like a champ. \n\nMilkweed\nEchinacea (coneflower)\n\nThe Sudbury VETAC Committee will also be on site\, offering native tree seedlings to support ongoing regreening efforts across Greater Sudbury. These trees are locally suited\, environmentally important\, and perfect for gardeners looking to make an impact beyond their backyard. \n\nRosa blanda (Smooth Wild Rose)\nAmalanchier laevis (Smooth Serviceberry)\n\n\n\n\nFree Compost Giveaway\nGreater Sudbury Environmental Services will be giving away 1 tonne of bagged portions of screened\, finished compost. They are also giving away promotional items\, swag\, and information sheets about composting\, green carts\, and residential waste management. Supplies of compost are limited so arrive early! \n\n\n\nDonate to the Plant Sale\nThe Sudbury Horticultural Society welcomes plant donations from members and supporters who wish to support this important fundraising initiative. Plants should be potted\, labelled\, and dropped off at one of our drop-off sites between May 26 and May 30\, so that they can be picked up in the late afternoon of Friday\, May 30th. She will be presenting “Caring for Indoor Plants”. \nAbout Cassandra:\nPhoto of Cassandra Miller\nCassandra Miller is a retired dog groomer and plant enthusiast with a passion for helping people feel better and houseplants. Small Pots is her way of joining the two\, allowing her better mental health\, a healthy space for people to feel at home\, and an opportunity to show people they can grow their own amazing plants. \nIn her past experiences of purchasing plants\, finding the right pot to match her decor\, or proper soil to repot into to help new plants thrive was always an issue\, as well as proper advice and care on maintaining great growing conditions. Often purchasing the wrong plants for her space and left feeling defeated\, her goal was to offer low maintenance\, easy-to-care-for plants with easy to follow instructions\, at a reasonable cost and pots to go with\, to help any black thumb turn green. \nCassandra’s presentation will be on general plant care\, light\, water and soil needs. She will also discuss what to do with a new plant when you get it home\, repotting new plants\, choosing proper container size\, and fertilizing.

Please bring your own coffee mug or travel mug. \nThe meeting at 2 pm will feature our guest speaker Franco Mariotti\, Naturalist and Science Communicator on the topic: “Hope in a Changing Landscape: The Sudbury Rewilding Story”  \nAbout Franco’s presentation:\nThe city of Greater Sudbury was just a few decades ago surrounded by a black landscape that looked like the Moon. The city had serious image problem that prevented new people and businesses from moving here. The Sudbury of today is a very different and attractive place to visit. The restoration of life to the landscape has positively changed the future of the city and has inspired hope locally and abroad. Explore through images and story what has happened to make that incredible positive change and what can be learnt from it. \nAbout Franco:\nFranco is a Biologist\, Naturalist and a Science Communicator. \nHe was employed as a Staff Scientist and Science Communicator at Science North for 32 years. He was there at the birth of the science centre where he developed exhibits\, programs\, videos and presentations for the public. During his time at Science North he has delivered hundreds of presentations and developed content for in-house exhibits. He was also part of the development team that over the years has created many travelling exhibits that travelled to major science centres and museums throughout North America. With his work and background in Natural History he has also travelled to Tanzania in the making of an IMAX film on Dr. Jane Goodall and to Borneo in another IMAX film on Orangutans. \nFranco is an avid traveller having visited ‘wild places’ in North and South America as well as Africa. \nFor decades Franco has been involved with numerous environmentally based community and provincial groups all dealing with the protection and restoration of the natural environment. \nUpon retiring at Science North\, he has been involved in the production of documentary films dealing with environmental issues and acts as a Naturalist and Guide for Polar Expeditions Cruise Ships in both the Arctic and in the Antarctic. \nPhoto of Franco Mariotti

SUMMARY:August Society General Meeting + Perennial and Vegetable Show + Speaker: Phil Beauchamp

Doors open at 1:15 pm for socializing and light refreshments. \nThe meeting at 2 pm will feature guest speaker Phil Beauchamp from Beautiful Field Farm and Fruit Trees.  \n\nAbout the Guest Speaker: Phil Beauchamp\nBeautiful Field Farm and Fruit Trees officially opened in Sept 2021\, but previously operated under the name Lewis Hardy Fruit trees from 2019 until 2021. Prior to that is was Lewis’s Hardy Fruit Trees that was found by Ron Lewis in 1982. \nIt was Ron Lewis’s dream and hobby after being frustrated with trees being offered for sale at most garden centres and nurseries. He made it his mission to seek out trees that would thrive in our climate\, and he found the amazing hardy varieties being bred and researched at the University of Saskatchewan. He was one of the very first people to make these available for gardeners and growers here in northern Ontario. His business has operated here annually in spring and Ron has been a local expert here making many presentations regarding this topic for local media and gardening organizations. \nRon has stepped aside in recent years and Phil Beauchamp\, Ron’s former neighbour\, has taken up the torch of making these hardy fruit trees available. Phil was always curious about what Ron or “Mr. Lewis” was doing on the other side of fence and often found himself over there\, admiring his giant pumpkins and all the amazing fruit trees. Of course Ron is always quick to impart his wisdom with anyone who comes to listen and Phil himself always had an interest in gardening\, farming and homesteading. So the first thing Phil did when he bought his own home was plant a whole lot of fruit trees. Of course he didn’t always do things properly and had more of a “plant first and figure out why they died later” approach. Which it turns out is the best way to learn right? So between constantly nagging Ron for advice and reading as much as he could on the topic he slowly developed a serious expertise on the topic. This has been an exciting (and demanding) opportunity for Phil who has a real entrepreneurial spirit and is deeply passionate about food security\, local agriculture and permaculture practices. \n\nAbout the Perennial and Vegetable Show\nWe will also be hosting our Perennial and Vegetable Show \nView the guidelines for entry into our August Show

DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThe Sudbury Market and Sudbury Horticultural Society invite all gardeners in Greater Sudbury to join in a celebration of gardening on Saturday May 25\, 2024. On that day\, the Society will host its annual Spring Plant Sale of hardy perennials donated by members and supporters.  Since these plants will be sourced from local gardens you can be sure that they are hardy in our growing zone.  Master Gardeners will be on-hand to provide gardening advice. A variety of donated gardening books and magazines will also be available for sale\, and those who are not already members of the Society will have an opportunity to learn more about the organization and purchase a membership. \n\nView photos from our 2023 Gardeners Day and Spring Plant Sale at the Market\n\n\n\n\n\nFree Seedling Giveaways\nSudbury VETAC Committee is giving away two seedlings to support ongoing regreening efforts in Greater Sudbury. These seedlings will be available at the VETAC booth located in the outdoor parking lot at Elm Place on May 25th. Please bring your own coffee mug or travel mug. \nThe meeting at 2 pm will feature guest speaker Beckie Holmes Charette with her presentation: “Step-by-Step Guide to Repotting Plants” \nBeckie Holmes Charette\nBeckie Holmes Charette is a plant aficionado who has been growing plants for as long as she can remember.  Her love of flora guided her career to become a professional grower at a local greenhouse where she honed her skills and advised what to plant where for the best growth and aesthetic appeal.  Beckie uses her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree to help people design their flower and vegetable gardens. \nBeckie expands her knowledge in the off seasons by taking courses on seed starting\, organic growing\, pesticides\, pests\, and biological control. \nIn January of 2024 Beckie started her own business beckiescreations.com where she grows and sells plants out of her home. \nGrowing is her passion.  She is excited to share her knowledge and assist new and seasoned gardeners grow happy\, healthy plants.  From houseplants to vegetables\, perennials and everything in between; plants are Beckie’s life! \nIn her presentation ‘Step by step guide to repotting plants’\, Beckie will demonstrate when and how to upsize\, focusing on proper watering techniques and root growth. \n\nBeckie Holmes Charette\nBeckiescreations.com\nPlants@beckiescreations.com

Please bring your own coffee mug or travel mug. \nThe meeting at 2 pm will feature guest speaker Ron Lewis with his presentation on “Tending the Six-Month Northern Vegetable Garden”. \nFor many gardeners in Greater Sudbury and area\, the vegetable garden ends with clean-up on the long\, Labour-Day weekend in early September. True\, some great treats (such as the best of tomatoes) are only available in the warm summer months. But as we move more seriously toward the 100 km (or is it 100 m) local food should not overlook the cool-season vegetables\, especially as\, notwithstanding climate change\, northerners have their share of cool (some would say ‘cold’) weather. This presentation explores growing some beloved vegetables that not only thrive in cool weather but actually give their best only when grown in cool weather\, avoiding the stress of summer heat (remember\, summer heat?). \nAbout Ron Lewis: \nRon Lewis\nRon is a long-time member of the Sudbury Horticultural Society\, and has reveled in entering vegetables and fruits he has grown into the annual SHS competition in August. Although well-known as a grower of winter-hardy fruit trees\, bushes\, and vines\, he considers himself an organic gardener who also grows fruit. With a background in gardening and teaching\, each for several decades in Greater Sudbury\, he likes nothing better than sharing his gardening ideas with others through PowerPoint presentations\, hands-on workshops\, and tours of his home garden; dozens of times for each of the first two\, and literally hundreds of times for the last. Aside from several presentations to the SHS over the years\, Ron has also presented to other horticultural societies in Ontario\, and twice to the Ontario Horticultural Association (OHA).
