This mushroom has many names including: wine cap/ king stropharia/ garden giant and is both beneficial to the garden soil and plants as well as being an edible mushroom!\n\nDuring this workshop we will discuss:\n\nHow to inoculate your garden bed\nThe materials you will need\nHow to maintain your garden bed and expand it\nHow to identify this mushroom\nHow it benefits the garden\nHow to harvest/ prepare it\n\nThere is no cost to the workshop\, but we ask that you please register through our website so we can anticipate numbers. SUMMARY:Gardeners Day and Spring Plant Sale at the Sudbury Market
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\n\nThe Sudbury Farmers Market and Sudbury Horticultural Society invite all gardeners in Greater Sudbury to join in a celebration of gardening at Science North on Saturday May 27th from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. \nOn that day\, the Society will host its annual Spring Plant Sale of hardy perennials donated by members and supporters.  Since these plants will be sourced from local gardens you can be sure that they are hardy in our growing zone.  Master Gardeners will be on-hand to provide gardening advice. \nA variety of donated gardening books and magazines will also be available for sale\, and those who are not already members of the Society will have an opportunity to learn more about the organization and purchase a membership. \nA variety of gardening-related organizations and businesses will join us to provide information about their services and sell many of their products. \n\nView photos from our 2022 Gardener’s Day at the Market\nView photos from our 2022 Spring Plant Sale at the Market\n\n\n\nNew IMAX Film\n\nIn 2023 VETAC celebrates 50 years of regreening in Greater Sudbury. SUMMARY:April Society General Meeting - Speaker: Dr. Joe Shorthouse
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our next public meeting at the Parkside Centre on Durham Street in Sudbury. Doors open at 1:15 pm for socializing and light refreshments. The meeting at 2 pm will feature our guest speaker\, Dr. Joe D. Shorthouse entitled “Purple lilacs – Sudbury’s welcome to spring” \nRead articles by Dr. Joe D. Shorthouse on our blog \nThis presentation celebrates the contributions made by lilac shrubs to gardens in the City of Greater Sudbury. Lilacs were introduced to Sudbury from eastern Europe and thrive here because they require cold winter temperatures for their buds to mature. They are loved for their purple flowers with rich fragrance and are said to symbolize success and royalty. The presentation will be richly illustrated with close-up photographs of the flowers\, pollinating insects\, and examples of shrubs from the Sudbury area and Manitoulin Island. Hints on growing lilacs will also be provided. \nJoe Shorthouse in a retired professor of entomology and environmental biology at Laurentian University where he taught\, and researched the biology of wild roses and lowbush blueberry. He is a graduate of the Universities of Alberta and Saskatchewan\, has written two books\, and authored several hundred scientific papers\, magazine and newspaper articles. He has written 16 front page Accent articles for the Sudbury Star\, about 50 feature articles for The Manitoulin Expositor\, and has been invited to lecture on his discoveries around the world including South Africa\, Turkey\, Japan\, Australia\, France\, Germany\, Brazil\, and Israel\, as well as all provinces and 7 states in the United States. He and his wife Marilyn have together walked through thick patches of wild roses and gardens in all parts of Canada for 52 years taking pictures used in presentations to nature\, service and garden clubs\, guests of cruise ships\, and after dinner entertainment at conferences. \n \nDr. Joe Shorthouse

DESCRIPTION:Sharing an event from a community partner\nCome celebrate Earth Day and the opening of the Climate Justice Corner\, Saturday\, April 22\, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. at the main library (74 Mackenzie) or on-line. \n\nLearn more about this event from the Coalition for a Liveable Sudbury website.\n\n1:30pm: Readings\, music\, poetry\, & art (in the library foyer\, or on FB live) \n\nReadings by Deanna Nebenionquit\, Sophia Mathur\, Adam Selalmatzidis\, Tt Scott\, Brydon King\, and Sharon Roy.\nPoem by poet laureate Kyla Heyming\, written for the occasion.\nMusic by Sicousi\, and sing along with the Song Sister Circle.\nArt by Sarah King Gold\, painted on site.\n\nTeaching and activity with Anishinaabek artist and educator Will Morin \n\n Sit in a circle while Will weaves a large dream catcher\, as he shares Ojibway teachings of spring and our connections to Mother Earth.\n\n2:30 – 3:30 PM: Indoor activities \n\nKids story time & kids crafts in the children’s area.\nOpen art activity: window painting to express your reflections.\nVisit the Climate Justice Corner.\n\n1:30 – 3:30:  Outdoor Earth Day activities for all ages  \n\nArt with natural activities: make wreaths with garden vines; make/paint salt dough decorations.\nMake carrot strips to plant in your garden.\nSilkscreening activity with Myths and Mirrors: Bring a t-shirt or other fabric\, and silkscreen a climate justice graphic onto it.\nSnacks.\n\nBetter Beginnings Better Futures Indigenous Led program will do the opening and closing. \nAs per guidance from Public Health\, masks are encouraged indoor\, and masks will be available at the event. \nSudbury Horticultural Society Library Donation\nThe Sudbury Horticultural Society has made a book donation to the Greater Sudbury Public Library in honour of this event.
